MAR. ANC. ,,Rameur occupant le rang le plus bas dans une trirème, le plus proche de la mer`` (GRUSS 1978). Chaque thalamite, encore au-dessous, tirait seul une rame lourde, qui sortait par des sabords ronds, presque au ras de l'eau (MILLE, Barnavaux, 1908, p. 300).

Prononc.:[talamit]. Étymol. et Hist. 1765 subst. masc. thalamitae (Encyclop. t. 16: thalamitae etoient les rameurs qui se trouvoient placés au milieu de chaque rame); 1808 thalamite (BOISTE). Empr. au gr. « rameur », dér. de « chambre à l'intérieur d'une maison », spéc. « sorte de grande chambre longue et étroite formée par les plats-bords du navire où étaient placés les rameurs inférieurs ».
